Der Wiener Jakob Dont gehört zu den bedeutenden Violinpädagogen des 19. Jahrhunderts und verfasste zahlreiche Studienwerke, die bis heute unverzichtbare Klassiker der Unterrichtsliteratur für Violine sind. Dazu zählen vor allem seine 24 „Études et Caprices“ op. 35, die schon zwischen 1840 und 1849 entstanden, aber von Dont 1880 in einer überarbeiteten Sammelausgabe in ihre definitive Form gebracht wurden.
