James Hook (* 1746 in Norwich, + 1827 in Boulogne) played as a child prodigy the spinet at the age of 4, by the age of 6 he already gave public concerts. Hook was taught among others by Charles Burney, one of the most important scholars of music in England at that time. Hook was an extremely productive composer. Besides his piano-method "Guida di Musica" his numerous compositions include works of almost all musical genres: there are instrumental solos, duets, trios, pieces for piano with and without accompaniment, symphonic pieces, concertos, (almost 2500) songs, part-songs, dramatic pieces, even an oratorio. Our edition of "Bonny Jem of Aberdeen" is in the original key of G major. Since Hook often notated his compositions in piano score, it was necessary to complete the "missing" right hand parts in sections where the voice is active. These passages have been harmonized as a figured bass accompaniment by the editor. Hook wrote the flute part separately a fifth higher (see above). It is therefore obvious that he was composing for the smaller "Quartflöte" which sounded an octave higher than the voice part. The combination soprano recorder and voice either together or alternating is therefore possible.
