9 Préludes op. 1

Titel: "9 Préludes op. 1"

This cycle is the only surviving work by the composer among his relatively numerous youthful creative achievements from the years 1899–1890. The Preludes, Op. 1, indicate clear references to the models of Chopin and early Scriabin. They concern primarily the shaping of piano form and texture, as well as expression – mainly of a lyrical nature. Szymanowski shapes the course based on the transformation of a single, initial motif, sometimes using polyrhythm and rich ornamentation. This cycle testifies to the composer's search for new harmonic means, derived from the assimilation of the norms of late Romantic musical language. In the cycle, uniform in expression, filled with a mood of seriousness and nostalgia, the dramatic Prelude in D minor No. 5 stands out, requiring virtuoso skill from the pianist. The most original piece is considered to be the last Prelude in B flat minor, in whose style, already moving away from Chopin's patterns, we find a foreshadowing of the impressionistic trend in Szymanowski's work.
