Sonata per violoncello e pianoforte op. 30

Titel: "Sonata per violoncello e pianoforte op. 30"

Divided between the cultures of Italy and Germany, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) interpreted twentieth-century modernism through his own natural leaning towards an aesthetic ideal that was strongly linked to the music of the past, from his beloved Mozart to Verdi's Falstaff. Apart from his stage works he dedicated himself to producing a repertoire of chamber music of great refinement, including the outstanding Sonata for cello and piano op. 30, composed in 1945 and dedicated to the cellist Georg Weigl. In this music, typified by a clear, immediate lyricism, the memory of eighteenth century musical tradition is wedded to romantic echoes of Brahms and Wagner.
